Council Leader’s message to Thames Water – “Thames Water must take action following the flooding on Caledonian Road on Tuesday 24 February”, Council Leader Cllr Una O’Halloran has urged.

In an open letter to Thames Water CEO, Chris Weston, Cllr O’Halloran called for the company to:

  • Support residents and businesses on Caledonian Road – ensure that insurance claims are paid out quickly, so those that have lost out from Thames Water negligence are appropriately recompensed.
  • Fix infrastructure to prevent further leaks.
  • Support people on the ground, respond effectively and improve communications.

Cllr O’Halloran commended council staff and the London Fire Brigade for their response and support of residents, and stated that after years of neglect and inaction, it’s time for Thames Water to put people before profits.

The council’s local economies team are on-site each day working to support local businesses and both the highways and lighting teams are working to get the road re-opened as soon as is possible – once Thames Water repairs are completed. There is also practical and emotional support available for anyone impacted via the Access Islington hubs.

Update at 09:45 26/02/2026

UK Power Networks have confirmed that the electricity supply for Ewen House and Ritson House was restored at 2 a.m. last night. They will be knocking on residents’ doors starting from this morning as they need to gain access to carry out safety checks in your home before the power can be supplied to individual flats.

Thames Water are continuing to work on permanently repairing the burst water main.

Their customer support van opened at 09:30 this morning at All Saints Church, N1 9QW, for anyone who wants to speak to them in person. We have been informed that you can make a claim for the loss of any frozen food here, which is a question some residents have asked about.

Update at 18:35 25/02/2026

Electricity supply to Ewen and Ritson House

We have been liaising with UK Power Networks (UKPN) about the electricity supply to your home. They are confident that power will be restored tonight, but it’s not clear how soon. It could be turned back on in the next couple of hours or at any time during the night. In order to turn the power back on they need to carry out safety checks in individual flats.

UKPN are using a third party company called Aspect to knock on people’s doors to check availability for these tests to be carried out. Aspect will also check if you would prefer for them to organise temporary accommodation for you for tonight. Once Aspect confirm you can provide access a second visit will be arranged to carry out the checks. If you are unable to provide access today they will knock on your door tomorrow morning. Please note that the power cannot be restored in your flat until these checks have been carried out.

Update at 11:00 25/02/2026

Thames Water are continuing with repair works to the major water main which burst yesterday afternoon.

Their latest update includes the following information:

Our teams are currently pumping water from the underground void so that repair work can safely resume. Your water will remain in supply, although you may experience some intermittent loss of pressure whilst we carry out the complex repair.

Our Loss Adjuster team and Customer Representatives are on site to support anyone affected by the flooding.

A customer support van is located at All Saints Church, Caledonian Road, N1 9QW, and is available as a hub for on-site assistance. The van will remain in place until 19:00

Everyone on the estate should have water. If you have any issues with your supply please contact Thames Water directly. As the system repressurises Thames Water advise that the water supply could initially sputter, or briefly run cloudy, but it should return to normal after being run for a short period.

They are continuing to provide updates on their website which you can find here

There is the possibility that residents on the estate could experience short term electricity outages while UK Power Networks (UKPN) check local substations to make sure they are safe to operate. In these instances you would normally get contacted by UKPN and any loss of supply should only be for a short period.

We expect that there could be some issues with leaks following reconnection of supply to the estate. If you notice any leaks anywhere on the estate or in your home please contact us immediately on 020 7613 8080.

We are working to restore the lift service at Crispe House as the lift pit was flooded. We need to replace some parts of the mechanism as well as carrying out drying out works. Works to restore the lift could take up to a week, but we hope that they can be completed sooner and will update residents in the block directly about this. If you have a vulnerability or additional needs and are likely to be impacted by the loss of lift service at Crispe House please email bsv@newlon.org.uk or call our Service Centre on 020 7613 8080 so we can provide appropriate support.

We are working closely with the local authority, emergency services, Thames Water and our own contractors on the clear up of the estate and the wider neighbourhood.

Our understanding is that any claims for loss or damage to possessions should be handled by Thames Water, who have said that they have loss adjusters working in the area. You can find more information on this here .

If you need any additional support we encourage you to contact Thames Water and register for their priority services support, you can find more information about this and what they are required to do in an incident here.
