Meet the family

We met up with the Liz and her daughters to see what it means to them to be Newlon's Eco Family.
Why did you decide to enter the competition to be Newlon's Eco Family?
"We entered because we want to set an example to others. We want to contribute what we know already about being more green in the home as well as what we are about to learn. Last year I took it upon myself to be more energy efficient at home and the girls are learning lots about it at school. I don't see it as a burden at all - we all need to do our bit to make our world sustainable."
What does it mean to you to be chosen as our Eco Family?
"We are very honoured to be the Eco Family as we know quite a lot of people applied. We have got a lot to learn, but we have also got a lot to share as well. We are definitely up for the challenge!"
What environmentally friendly things did you do before you started the project?
"We are always recycling, we use energy efficient light bulbs and we keep turning the temperature down in our house. We don't let the tap run when we brush our teeth and if there is the smallest leak we get it fixed straight away as we are on a water meter. We have also started cycling more and stopped using the car so much, which helps save money too. One of the things we have been doing for a long time is getting recycled furniture. We ask people who leave items outside their houses or we get stuff from Hackney FreeCycle or boot sales."
What month are you looking forward to the most?
"All of them really! The girls are looking forward to the 'Grow your own' month as they do that in school so they can combine their learning skills from school to growing our own food here. I have never grown herbs or anything and I have a small garden, so I am looking forward to seeing how we can do that."
Look out for the monthly updates from the Eco Family. At the moment they are getting their starting measurements for gas/electric/refuse/recycling and they are also looking at Climate Change and what it means to them.
