Composting (pdf)

Eco Family diary

"The Eco House challenge for the month of February was all about composting and measuring how much my family were contributing to composting.

We were composting using mainly left over fruit and vegetable peelings and suitable waste. We as a family didn’t really know an awful lot about composting, other than it was home grown, but didn’t understand what actually made up the compost heap.

I learnt that there were beneficial reasons to why we should all be composting our food waste. This includes things such as having home grown compost is good for your garden soil and plants as it gives plants the rich nutrients it thrives on. Initially I thought this would be a very hard challenge to achieve but in theory, this challenge was extremely easy to set up once I got professional advice, and they were able to answer any queries I had.

The challenge is still ongoing as it takes up to 9 months to establish a first set of compost. Once this is achieved, you can just keep continuing to top up with your waste. It should then be readily available to use...as simple as that! We will certainly use our home grown compost for indoor and outdoor planting.

We also have a handy kitchen caddy when we dispose any appropriate food waste for the compost, which once filled goes straight into the compost. We have little maintenance to do once the waste has gone in. We don’t even have a big garden so it proves that even the smallest outdoor spaces can still get involved too.

My girls at home are enjoying the fact that we compost and are learning lots about why we compost – so it’s a good educational learner for them. They are also checking if the food waste is appropriate before putting it into the caddy. To be honest it is second nature, and we can’t wait as a family to have our first ever established compost ...that would make us proud!"
