Arsenal Regeneration Team

The Arsenal Regeneration Programme has always been more than just a new stadium for Arsenal FC. It is about the long term commitment to regenerate a former brownfield area into a community with affordable housing, employment, education and more.

To do this, Newlon partnered with the London Borough of Islington and Arsenal FC to create ART – the Arsenal Regeneration Team. When the Arsenal project began ART started an ongoing period of community consultation to harness the social and regeneration opportunities to reflect the aspirations of the local communities. The team wanted to promote the potential of the area to benefit both local residents and local communities and the team have been successful in this. Although the team no longer exists, employees of ART are still working on projects in the area. For example, Newlon Fusion, our community regeneration team, are in charge of the small grants fund (a fund for small businesses in the Arsenal Regeneration area). You can read about this ongoing community work at Arsenal and other areas by visiting our Community Regeneration section.

Below are just some of the achievements of the scheme that has come about thanks to partnerships like ART:

* New Waste Transfer station built to improve handling of refuse and recycling. It also includes a dedicated education centre to encourage recycling.

* A new and mixed community that works thanks to developments that house Key Workers, private owners, Shared Owners (part buy-part rent) and residents from local authority waiting lists.

* Increased inward investment - it is estimated that an additional £8 million a year is now spent in the Arsenal Regeneration Area.

* Islington Business Enterprise team set up to provide jobs and investment brokerage, forming part of the Borough's strategy to reduce worklessness.

* More than 300 new permanent jobs created.

* New Community IT Centre at the Ashburton Triangle which provides double the capacity for the commuinty training learning programmes run by Arsenal FC and Islington Council.

* Small Grants Fund set up with Neighbourhood renewal funding to provide support to a range of voluntary organisations, administered by Newlon Housing Trust. For an application form visit our Current Projects page in the Community Regeneration section.

* Training Programmes, including partnership with the LDA and construction partners to deliver construction skills training for unemployed people from the Arsenal Regeneration Area.

* Support programme for young people excluded from school at Key Stage 4, set up by Newlon Fusion and CEA.
