Royal Free Hospital

Newlon Housing Trust has been working with the Royal Free Hospital Trust, London Borough of Camden and developers, United House, to build brand new accommodation and refurbish two existing blocks of housing for the hospital’s staff.

The work at Royal Free Hospital started with the refurbishment of Queen Mary’s House, which was completed in 2006. This involved upgrading 50 apartments and communal areas in this accommodation block, sited to the north of the Hospital’s main campus. This was followed by the major demolition project of William Gunn House, which is now being developed into a new building - Coppett’s Wood. The development will provide new and improved housing for the staff who are currently living in Anne Bryan's House, situated opposite the new development, as well as providing additional accommodation for new employees.

Coppett’s Wood will have 141 units, including 53 self-contained studio flats. There are also one and two bedroom flats and these will help provide more than double the accommodation that was available in the old William Gunn House.

Coppett’s Wood also features a Green Roof. This means that the roof area of the building is covered with vegetation and soil, which is an environmental initiative with great benefits, including retaining heat and attracting birdlife.

Once Coppett’s Wood is ready for its residents on 26th August 2008, work will begin on refurbishing Anne Bryan's House to further improve accommodation at the hospital.

We look forward to opening the new Coppett’s Wood development later on in the year.
