Celebrating 35 years of providing homes & servicesNewlon Housing Trust

Transfer Policy

Newlon has been providing housing for single people, couples, families, people requiring support and people with disabilities for nearly 40 years. We aim to let properties in a fair and non-discriminatory way to meet the needs of the communities we work in and our existing tenants.

Who can transfer
Newlon lets properties to existing tenants who need to move and new applicants referred by the local authority.

In certain cases, we may accept applicants from another Housing Association or agency, (e.g. HOMES application, or for 'hard to let' bedsits). Please read our lettings policy to find out more.

How applicants are selected
Most boroughs now operate a ‘Choice Based Lettings’ system whereby the local authority advertises all vacant properties to those on their housing waiting lists.  Successful ‘bidders’ then get the opportunity to view the property.  The person with the highest priority who wants the property is then formally offered the property and interviewed by Newlon.

Check with your Tenancy Management Officer whether you live in a borough that offers choice based letting. If you do not, your Tenancy Management Officer will advise you how to apply for a transfer.

All applicants are interviewed at a time and date convenient to them. An interpreter can be arranged if required. A standard application form is completed giving details of the applicant’s housing circumstances, needs and preferences. The Lettings staff and Housing Team Leader ensure decisions are fair, objective and accurate when reviewing the application.

Currently, applicants in Hackney and supported housing move-on applicants, will be informed at interview of the property details. Once the application is approved and the property is available for letting, the applicant will be given an opportunity to view the property before making a decision to accept or decline.

If you require further information, please contact your Tenancy Management Officer or our Senior Lettings Officer.
